On Saturday, March 2nd eighteen students from Downingtown East and the STEM Academy competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) Region 1A meet,

The students demonstrated their outstanding work ethic and dedication to scientific research, performing admirably at the regional meet. Fifteen out of eighteen students won a 1st Prize and three students won a 2nd Prize at the event.

Three STEM Academy students were recognized formally for their achievements during the awards ceremony. Two students earned a “perfect score” – Saptak Das and Sohum Gautam. In addition, there were two “Humanitarian Scientist Award” prizes given out at the Region 1A meet: “The student performed a study to enhance and promote the dignity and stewardship of humanity or the environment through their research. The project contains precise real-world applications for improving social, economic, or environmental conditions.” The Humanitarian Scientist Award also included a $50 prize. STEM Academy students Mihika Bhowmik and Sohum Gautam took home the only two prizes given out for this award at this year’s PJAS Region 1A fair.

The fifteen 1st prize winners have qualified for the PJAS State Meet at Penn State University in May, where students will compete for awards, prizes and scholarships up to $8,000 per year at PSU. Below is a picture of the students who stayed for the awards ceremony.
