Submitted by Mr. Paul Setlock
On Feb 27, 2023, the STEM Academy Black Student Union hosted a Chat and Chew Lunch and Learn gathering of students and local law enforcement officers as part of the Making Connections Program incentive in our district. In attendance were various students as well as Trooper Macintyre from the Pa. State Police, Corporal Garcia of the West Brandywine Police Department, and Tim Hubbard, Chief Security Officer for the DASD.
Over lunch, the group discussed topics like our Community Outreach platforms, careers in law enforcement, police academy training education, daily police officer duties, K9 searches, lockdown drills, and the current difficulties in hiring/staffing police departments. Looking forward, the group discussed future plans of more Chat and Chew meetings, holding facilitated topical discussions, Trick or Treat Night, Hot Seat discussions, and a possible field trip to Coatesville Emergency Response training center. There is a great interest in developing the Making Connections Program.
